In a fantastic event in Sydney on the 9 Oct, the ATS in conjunction with Engineering Heritage Australia celebrated the 75th anniversary of the commencement of the iconic Snowy Mountains Scheme and the 50th anniversary of the completion of this project in 1974.
This was an iconic project for a number of reasons, including nation building, introducing multiculturism to Australia and providing opportunities to many European post war migrants, not to mention providing reliable renewable power generation and irrigation of semi-arid land. It remains an important symbol of Australia’s engineering achievements and the launching pad for a future iconic tunnelling and underground space project – Snowy 2.0 https://lnkd.in/gAemMfw .
The celebration culminated with Arnold Dix, in his capacity as President of the ITA, presenting an ITA award to Damon Miller from Snowy Hydro celebrating the Snowy Mountains Scheme as one of the 50 Iconic tunnelling and underground space projects of the past 50 years.
